Rose Perkins: Love (Topic of my Own Choosing)

     In class today we had a short discussion on different types of love. The discussion started on the different words for love in the Spanish language, and I do not completely remember how this topic came up. However, after discussing the different words for love in Spanish, we talked about when they are used and what situations each word is appropriate for. Then, we talked about the different words for love in Greek, and the situations that they are used in. I found this discussion interesting, and it brought up a few questions for myself. 

    We know there are many different words in each language meaning love. However, I have always wondered where these words came from. Who made them? Furthermore, who decided what each one meant and the situations they were appropriate for? Likely, it was just societal trends that developed and eventually became the normal. However, it is still interesting to think about. At some point it was decided when each word that means love could be used, and who each word could be used for. With how many words there are, the rules seem complicated for us. When I have tried to teach myself Greek, the rules are very difficult to understand. However, for native speakers, the rules are just second nature. They do not really think about it, they just do it. 

    It is also interesting that when translating it, we have decided that each of the many words all mean love in English, when in reality, there is a deeper meaning. In English, there are other words that mean love, but we as a society have decided that love is the main term. However, then, how do we decide what kind of love we mean when we use the term love? We often show it by our actions what kind of love we mean and feel. In reality, we just do not think about it this deeply. We just do it and use the terms how it feels right. Thinking deeply about it is interesting, however, because it makes you wonder how we got here, and it is often confusing to think deeply about.

The Untethered Soul

Another one of the many books that I am simultaneously reading with other books that I am really excited about is The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael Alan Singer. Although I am not very far in the novel, I think that the first bit that I have read is already so rich and ties in well to Somewhere I Have Never Traveled because of the idea of the sense of self. Both works mention the idea that we as humans are always trying to grapple with our sense of selves. I think that it is a really interesting concept and my philosophy, perhaps it's just the easy out, is that our brains were simply not created to be able to comprehend things outside of our world. I think it's a great thing to try but I believe that there is so much more knowledge that we cannot know.

Iris Denner: The Iliad (Assigned Readings)

The Iliad is a Greek epic that follows Achilles throughout the Trojan War . Achilles becomes the hero of the epic by killing his enemy, Hector, brutally. This series of poems is rather violent and follows Greek tradition in writi ng style. It is simply titled with Iliad meaning the town in Troy. At the time it acted as a history story for the Greek people and was passed down through spoken word. We now attribute the writings to Homer and interpret them as something that one st rives to accomplish the greatness that Achilles reached. The journey took place during the war, making it connect well to today’s society of veterans who go on journeys throughout their time being deployed.
