Sanai Williams: Garfield's effect (Outside Reading)
We all know of the popular fat orange cat famous for his sarcasm and love of lasagna. However, I've noticed there is more depth to this cat, or this myth, than previously realized. The effect this story has had on kids and adults have stood the tests of time.
We have discussed that myths are stories, but Garfield is not a story. Comics are short comedic Tellings of the cat's antics. Somedays he's kicking a dog, and other days he is insulting his owner. Comics provide a short look into Garfield's personality and because it is funny we want to reenact it. Funny things make us happy, and we find ourselves wanting to emulate it. Thus, Garfield has become a catalyst for a snarky, sassy pessimistic, and hunger generation. I am proof of this theory as I owned Garfield's fat cat three pack, and I have an uncontrollable amount of sass ever since.
