Lucas Stopper: Empathy (in-class discussion)

In class two weeks ago, we talked a great deal about empathy. This lecture really resonated with me because I have always felt I feel more empathy than some other people, sometimes to the point that it is downright overwhelming. Discussing that feeling with other people was a great feeling. There have been numerous times I have had to leave conversations because emotions were too high and I was feeling overwhelmed. I think the idea of empathy is often overlooked or confused with sympathy, which waters down its effects. Empathy may not be that you feel sorry for a person, but instead that you understand that person. Even if that person may have done something wrong, empathy allows you to understand why. In my opinion, empathy is much more powerful than sympathy.
