Iris Denner: Music Albums (My Choosing)

Listening to an album in its entirety is a lost art of storytelling. Music albums have a very specific order of songs that have been carefully curated by the artist and their team. Each song tells a story, but the album displays the full picture when listened to in order. One loses a part of the experience when listening to an album on shuffle. Playlist makers also try to make a story by using songs from different artists. Spotify playlist makers have said in interviews that when people press the shuffle button on their playlists it makes them physically cringe. Shuffle is a new invention that has been created in the age of digital music listening. In the past, the closest to shuffle one would get would be listening to the radio because otherwise, it was a cassette, compact disc, or vinyl which could only skip. Storytelling is a way one might express a journey. An easy example would be the Eras Tour by Taylor Swift. This tour displays each of her albums and the clear differences between each and how they represent different parts of her life. Listening to an album may not encompass the listener to go on a journey themselves, but it does tell the story of the characters in the album, which is most times the singer themselves.
