Grayson Plummer: Outside Readings- Journal Entry #12- Can't Hurt Me pt. 2

During my marathon training I read a few different books on running, which I will be discussing throughout these few journal entries. One of the books I read was Can't Hurt Me by David Goggin's, a book on his experience physically and mentally throughout his life. The quote that I would like to focus on, that I had starred when I read the book a few months ago was, "A lot of us surround ourselves with people who speak to our desire for comfort. People who would rather treat the pain of our wounds and prevent further injury than help us callous over them and try again. We need to surround ourselves with people who will tell us what we need to hear, not what we want to hear, but at the same time not make us feel we’re up against the impossible". This quote resonated with me, as I feel before I came to college myself, all the friends I had were people that weren't willing to tell me what I needed to hear, and rather just said what was easy. I also was part of this, as I was someone who was afraid to speak my mind and tell someone what I really thought. I think this an extremely important topic, as in the real world, people will tell us how things are, and we have to be able to handle that.
