Gabe Snyder Blog 9 - Life of Pi (Outside Reading)
Life of Pi was a fantastic book that I read in my high school about an Indian man's journey on a life raft with a tiger from his father's zoo after a boat trip goes awry. The isolation and wonder felt by Pi has really made me wonder what I'd do if I was stranded, only with animals to keep me company. Life of Pi explores many religious beliefs and themes, as Pi desperately wants to get closer to God in some way, shape, or form, often attending multiple religious practices during the week. His religious beliefs are often challenged due to his isolation and seeming misfortune, but his journey is not unrewarded as he eventually finds land and returns to civilization. An interesting theme found in this journey is the companionship between Pi and the tiger, Richard Parker, whom Pi initially fears due to his development around zoos and the ferocity of Tigers. Pi is disheartened when the two separate, as Pi never gets to say farewell to his companion drifting on an open sea, sharing his misery and loneliness.
