Amber Samsel: Thoughts on Sublime (Req. 3) - Blog 9
Previously, we talked about what it means for something to be sublime. In class, we determined that something that is sublime is truly great, expansive, grand, awe-some, and yet at the same time we are repulsed, overwhelmed, and avoidant of it. Why is it that we avoid something so great (other than "its too overwhelming")? It made me wonder if this is the same thing that abuse victims go through when they finally found someone who is nice, and yet they aren't comfortable with it. They are so use to the abuse, that it is comfortable for them, so they go back to it. Do we as humans avoid the sublime purely out of discomfort? What would happen if we did go towards the sublime? What would we find there? Would that make us better human beings?
